Check Activation Lock first

An “iPhone Locked to Owner” message means the handover is not complete. Ask the owner to remove the lock through the legitimate account process. Do not accept a later-unlock promise. A Hello screen means the device was erased; it still needs activation before you can check normal use.

Read the battery information in context

In Settings, open Battery and look for the battery-health information available on that model. Maximum capacity estimates capacity relative to when the battery was new. Lower capacity can mean shorter time between charges. Read any service or verification message as well.

There is no single battery percentage that makes every used iPhone a good buy. Compare the asking price with the cost and inconvenience of any likely battery service. A high figure does not guarantee the rest of the device is sound.

Ask about repairs, then test the parts

Look in Settings → General → About for available parts and service history. Availability depends on the model and software. Ask the seller to explain any recorded work and provide receipts where available.

Then do the physical tests: front and rear cameras, focus, microphone, speakers, touch response, charging and buttons. With permission, test Face ID or Touch ID. Ask for a written explanation if any feature does not work.

Check the SIM variant you are buying

Do not assume that every version of an iPhone has the same SIM arrangement. Confirm the model variant, whether it accepts your physical SIM or needs eSIM, and any carrier restriction. Test your intended network where possible.

A cheaper imported unit is less useful if you cannot activate the line you plan to use. Ask your network about support for the exact variant before paying.

Compare the complete purchase

Put two offers side by side: model, storage, battery information, visible damage, repair disclosures, included accessories and written return terms. A lower sticker price can lose its appeal once you budget for a repair.

Before leaving, make sure the invoice identifies the device and any agreed condition details. Keep your own account credentials private during setup.

Questions buyers ask

Should I buy an iPhone that is locked to its previous owner?

No. The owner must remove Activation Lock before purchase. Do not pay for a promise to bypass it.

Does 100% battery health mean an iPhone is new?

No. Battery capacity is one reading about the battery. It does not establish the age, ownership or repair history of the whole phone.
