Read the model number, not just the sales name
Ask to see the model number and storage in Settings → About phone. Compare these with the listing and receipt. Regional variants can differ, so establish the SIM arrangement and intended network before paying.
If a feature is essential to you, test it on that device. Do not assume a listing title or a box proves which variant is inside.
Spend time on the display
Try light and dark screens at several brightness levels. Look for coloured lines, uneven areas or a faint image that stays visible after the screen changes. Type a message and move your finger across the full touch area.
Inspect the frame and back with the case removed. On a folding Galaxy, look closely at the hinge and inner display and test opening and closing gently. Ask about screen or hinge repairs rather than judging only the outside.
Run the built-in diagnostics
Where available, Samsung Members offers Phone diagnostics for supported Galaxy devices. Open its diagnostics or support area and run the available tests. Menu names vary with software and model. Ask about any failed or unavailable test.
Use the results alongside hands-on checks. Make a call, record audio, take photos with each camera and test charging using known-working accessories. Passing a test is not a warranty or proof of a phone’s history.
Complete the account handover
Google device protection can require the previous account after a reset. The seller should remove their Google account before resetting for a sale; also resolve their Samsung account and screen lock. Let the owner handle their credentials.
Complete setup and confirm access before accepting the device. If it still asks for a previous owner’s login, pause the purchase. Do not pay someone offering an account bypass as a substitute for a proper handover.
Get repair and return terms in writing
Ask whether the display, battery, cameras or charging port have been repaired. Ask who did the work and what evidence is available. Treat vague answers as an unresolved part of the purchase.
Confirm the total price, accessories, faults, return period and warranty scope on the receipt. Decide what you can live with before payment, rather than hoping a limitation will disappear after an update.
Questions buyers ask
How do I test a used Samsung phone?
Use Samsung Members diagnostics if available, then test calls, data, touch, cameras, microphones, speakers and charging yourself. Check the exact model and ownership handover too.
Is a factory reset enough?
A reset alone does not prove that account protection has been resolved. The seller should remove their accounts and you should complete setup successfully.
